Helen Goldsmith

Helen Goldsmith (born Sydney, 1937) showed artistic promise from childhood and studied at the National Art School in 1953. She spent around twenty years working as a commercial illustrator for newspapers and magazines — experience she credits as the foundation of her precise observation and draughtsmanship. She later returned to fine art, working in oils, pastels, drawing and watercolour.

Goldsmith is best known for her watercolours, particularly her depictions of older Australian homes and streetscapes, country subjects and still life. She has illustrated three books, most notably Ruth Park's The Harp in the South and Poor Man's Orange, and RM Williams' I Once Met a Man. Her articles have appeared in Australian Artist, Artists' Palette and International Artist.

Over her career she has won more than 130 first prizes at major art competitions, including the Peter Stuyvesant 1000 for four consecutive years, the 1991 Combined Art Societies of Sydney Artist of the Year Award, and the 1999 Royal Art Society of NSW Medal of Distinction. She has held over 30 solo exhibitions and taught widely across NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. A member of the Australian Watercolour Institute since 1991, she is also a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW. She moved to the Coffs Harbour region in 2009
