Bill Freeman, born on June 16, 1929, was an Australian artist who cherished the bush and loved capturing its essence through painting. Raised in Minmi, Freeman’s early artistic ambition was met with resistance from his father, but his passion endured. After working in a Newcastle clothing factory, where he met his future wife Dawn, he transitioned to painting full-time by his early twenties, thanks to her support.

Freeman, largely self-taught, received valuable guidance from renowned artist William Dobell, who encouraged him to add signature elements to his paintings, like his famous “odd-numbered” chickens. Known for his oil landscapes, seascapes, and portraits, Freeman’s works were a heartfelt reflection of Australia's natural beauty.

Despite his growing reputation, Freeman remained humble, painting for the joy of it, not the accolades. Over a 67-year career, he mentored fellow artists, held successful exhibitions, and won the prestigious Dobell Art Prize. His legacy continues to inspire through the Bill Freeman Encouragement Award.
