Charles Ephraim Smith Tindall (1863-1951 was born in Scotland and emigrated to New South Wales in 1887. He worked in watercolours which to some extent were not as well-regarded then as oils. He was prominent in raising the profile of watercolour. In 1896 he was elected to the executive council of the Art Society of New South Wales. He often painted on marine themes especially around Sydney Harbour but also made a number of trips inland and painted landscapes. He exhibited often to favourable reviews and his work is still held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He achieved considerable success and prospered during a long career. His last exhibition was in 1945.
