Doreen Gadsby (1926–2016)
Also known as Doreen Coburn

Doreen Gadsby was an Australian painter known for her bright, optimistic landscapes and strong use of colour. Born in Lismore, New South Wales, she studied at East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School) during the Second World War. She later became part of an active Sydney art circle that included artists such as Lloyd Rees and Brett Whiteley.

Gadsby exhibited regularly in Australia and Canada from the 1960s and was a finalist in the Wynne Prize in 1960. She lived for a time in Canada and travelled widely, drawing inspiration from places including Italy, New York, Tasmania and Canada. Many of her works are based on memory and earlier sketches rather than direct observation.

Later in life she continued to paint despite severe vision loss caused by illness. Her work from this period is noted for its warmth, energy and positive outlook. Doreen Gadsby died in 2016.
