Earl Hingston is a New Zealand–born artist whose early training under Royal College of Art graduate Ted Lewis gave him a strong grounding in design and draughtsmanship. His professional career began in advertising before he became a key figure in New Zealand’s emerging graphic‑design industry, later opening Wellington’s first design consultancy. His most significant commission was the creation of the New Zealand Post Office logo, an identity used nationwide for decades.
After moving to Australia in 1978, Hingston continued his design work before focusing more fully on painting. Watercolour is his preferred medium, valued for its difficulty and expressive potential. Rather than strict realism, he aims to capture a lively, recognisable impression of his subject through confident, calligraphic brushwork. His work has appeared in Australian Artist, and he is a Fellow of the Australian Society of Marine Artists and an Associate of the Royal Art Society of NSW.
This original Earl Hingston watercolour shows a calm coastal scene with boats pulled up on the shore and tall trees in the foreground. Hingston uses loose, confident brushstrokes and soft colour washes to create a clear, simple composition with a relaxed coastal feel. The focus is on atmosphere rather than fine detail, giving the work an easy, natural character. A good example of Hingston’s direct, design‑led approach to watercolour and his interest in capturing a quick, recognisable impression of everyday coastal life
