Robert Hagan

Robert Hagan, born in 1947 in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, is a renowned Australian impressionist painter. Raised in the picturesque Tweed Valley, he initially pursued a career in education after earning a degree in Economics and a Diploma in Education. However, his passion for painting eventually led him away from teaching and into a full-time career as an artist by age 28.

Hagan's early exhibitions were not immediately successful, but he persevered, teaching himself how to paint through trial and error. His breakthrough came while painting beach scenes, where he realized that simplicity was key, often using just three colors to capture the beauty of the seaside. His work gained recognition, and he sold his first professional piece at a charity art show.

Hagan’s career flourished internationally, especially after moving to San Diego in 1991. He became well-known in the U.K. and U.S., producing books, giving seminars on painting, and even creating a TV series for Discovery Channel ‘A Splash of Color’.

His work captures both the rugged drama of outback horsemen and the romance of delicate seaside settings.

This watercolour shows a calm coastal scene with boats pulled up on the shore and tall trees in the foreground. Hingston uses loose, confident brushstrokes and soft colour washes to create a clear, simple composition with a relaxed coastal feel. The focus is on atmosphere rather than fine detail, giving the work an easy, natural character. A good example of Hingston’s direct, design‑led approach to watercolour and his interest in capturing a quick, recognisable impression of everyday coastal life
